Organic Ice Cream from The Ethical Dairy

We are delighted to be adding organic ice cream to The Ethical Dairy range. We've been talking about these ice creams and testing out recipes for months now, and we finally launched this week at the Farm Shop & Deli Show at the NEC in Birmingham – one of the biggest trade fairs in the UK for the independent retail sector.

For those of you who know our background, these ice creams draw on our 20 years experience of producing luxury dairy ice cream as Cream o’ Galloway.  Like Cream o’ Galloway ice creams they are made with our own milk from our cow with calf dairy farm and they're flavoured with natural, carefully sourced ingredients; but the ice creams we make under The Ethical Dairy brand will be a little bit different.

The main difference is that ice creams from The Ethical Dairy are all 100% organic, including the cream - and we use a great deal of cream in our ice cream recipes! This means they’re a little bit more expensive than non-organic ice creams.  We’ve spent around 6 months trying out different flavour combinations that we thought would appeal to a wide range of palates. The stand out flavour that might surprise you is an unflavoured ice cream that we’ve named Pure & Simple – no vanilla, just a beautifully creamy, natural dairy flavour that goes with almost everything!  The three flavoured ice creams - Lemon Curd, Mango & Banana and Choc & Ginger - between them are tangy, sweet and spicy, we’ve tried to hit all the flavour notes in this compact range!

The packaging is different too. The ice cream is available in 500ml retail tubs and 100ml individual tubs, and we are thrilled to have found compostable 500ml tubs. This is the first time we’ve used packaging that has its own shelf life, and we’re really keen to see how these work in practice.

The Farm Shop & Deli show is the first proper outing for these products and we have been very pleased with the feedback from retailers so far.  Unlike the cheese we can’t send ice cream by mail order so it won’t be appearing in our online shop, but we have a great distributor who will be working hard to get these ice creams into farm shops, delis and speciality retailers across most of the UK.
